Abstract

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate the degree of elementary school students¡¯ internet addiction and to identify factors affecting internet addiction.

Methods: The subjects of the study were 669 students of 3 elementary schools in a rural area. The data were analyzed by SAS program with x©÷-test. Fisher¡¯s exact test. t-test. ANOVA and Scheffe¡¯s test, multivariate logistic regression.

Results: In the degree of the internet addiction were 4.48% of high risk user group. 7.32% of potential risk user group. and 88.19% of general user group. The degree of internet addiction was significantly different according to gender, record at school. economic status. mother¡¯s child-rearing attitude, impulsiveness, attitude of mother about internet use, using time of internet. the number of using internet per week, reasons for internet use. Factors influencing the degree of internet addiction were impulsiveness, gender, attitude of mother about internet use, using time of internet.

Conclusions: This study showed that prevalence of internet addiction was much lower than expected. But. when the internet addiction prevention program is developed, it should be necessary to take into account for the factors influencing internet addiction.
